A Bench Built for Fast Switching

Applying a SiC device correctly is as important as choosing the right part, and because silicon carbide switches so fast, the layout and gate drive decide whether a design works. To support customers more effectively, BeiLuo has opened an FAE verification bench dedicated to Cree SiC MOSFETs and diodes. The bench lets our engineers measure gate waveforms, switching loss, turn-off overshoot and thermal behavior before a customer commits to a design, turning advice into evidence.

What We Measure

The bench is equipped with high-bandwidth oscilloscopes, differential probes, low-inductance current sensors and a thermal stage. Engineers characterize gate-drive behavior, measure turn-off overshoot at the device terminals, and quantify switching loss across frequency. For the four-lead TO-247-4 package, the bench highlights how the dedicated driver-source pin affects ringing, which is easy to demonstrate. For SiC diodes, the bench verifies the forward voltage at temperature and the surge capability under a controlled pulse.

From Selection to Validation

When a customer asks which device suits their application, our FAE team can now validate the recommendation on the bench. We compare the low and higher on-resistance SiC MOSFETs, match a SiC diode to the freewheeling path, and evaluate SiC against silicon for a given operating point. The result is a design path backed by measured data, which reduces the risk of late-stage surprises.

Thermal Validation

Thermal design is often where designs fail. The bench measures case temperature under load, letting us verify the heatsink and PCB thermal design against the device's junction-to-case thermal resistance and the customer's ambient. For SiC, where the on-resistance rises with temperature, this validation is especially valuable, because it confirms the hot-value estimate the customer used.

Supporting Customers Remotely

Not every customer can visit the bench, so our engineers share measured curves and waveforms remotely and walk customers through the interpretation. A short measurement campaign often resolves an overshoot or thermal question that would otherwise take weeks of trial and error on the customer's own board.

Part of a Practical Service

The bench complements our stock and documentation programs. Together they mean a customer can get a genuine Cree device quickly, receive complete import documentation, and get measured technical support that matches the part to the job. For manufacturers who cannot afford a redesign late in a project, that combination shortens the path to a working design and keeps production on schedule.

Bring-Up Support During Design

Beyond measurement, the bench supports bring-up. When a customer's first board powers up and the overshoot or temperature is not as expected, our engineers can reproduce the condition on the bench and compare it against a reference. That turns a vague symptom into a specific cause, whether it is a loop-inductance problem, a gate-drive problem or a thermal-interface problem, and the result is a faster fix and a design that reaches production with confidence.

Root-Cause Sessions

We run short root-cause sessions with customers who cannot visit in person, sharing measured waveforms and walking through the checks in order, from the overshoot and the gate waveform to the thermal path and the filter. Most issues are resolved in the first session, because the common causes are well understood and the measurement makes them visible.

Documentation for Audits

The bench also produces measurement records that customers can keep for their own quality files. For audit-heavy industries, having a documented characterization of the chosen device, performed before design release, strengthens the supply-chain file and answers questions that would otherwise surface late.

These records also help when a customer moves from prototype to production, because the measured performance established during design becomes the reference against which production units are compared. If a later batch behaves differently, the bench can quickly determine whether the cause is the device, the assembly or the application, which shortens the path to a fix and protects the production schedule.

From Prototype to Production

The same measurement discipline that supports bring-up also supports the transition to volume. A short characterization of the selected device, captured before release, gives the production and quality teams a reference so any later change is immediately visible, and it supports the supplier qualification file that audit-heavy customers maintain.
